The Chantry Chapel of St Mary the Virgin

Wakefield

2006 was the 650th Anniversary of the Chantry Chapel

- this years programme

What's been happening

"Four Chantry Chapels stood at the principal entrances to the medieval town of Wakefield - St Mary Magdalene's at Westgate Bridge, St John the Baptist near the site of the present lodge to the Grammar School in Northgate, St Swithin's beyond Eastmoor on the road to York and the Chapel of St Mary the Virgin on Wakefield Bridge". This intoduction is taken from a leaflet by John Goodchild and is published by the Friends of the Chantry Chapel, Wakefield

Although, many chapels of this kind were built only four have survived the years, Rotherham, St Ives, Bradford-on-Avon and, of course, the Chapel on the bridge at Wakefield.

This unofficial site, however, the only site dedicated to Wakefield's only remaining Chantry Chapel, aims to inform about the past, the present and the future, as well as support the Friends of the Chantry Chapel in their efforts to keep the chapel for future generations.
